Villamor Air Base: evacuee operations #YolandaPH #reliefPH

POSTED ON November 19, 2013 AT 8:00 am

The call for volunteers is ongoing for Villamor Air Base, 24 hours a day.

You may sign up online as volunteer, or sign up as cook or kitchen assistant for the hot meals kitchen set up by Art Relief Mobile Kitchen, or if you are with car and can drive sign up for Oplan Hatid to bring evacuees wherever they might have family in Manila (and beyond). They’ve also called for therapists and counsellors for traumatized survivors, breastfeeding mothers to become wet nurse for infant survivors, and toys and slippers for child-survivors.

On the evening of the 18th, at around 10:00PM, we dropped off plastic spoons and forks, styrobowls and cups for the kitchen and decided to go around to look at where we might be needed. We hadn’t signed up for anything but figured it would be obvious where there was a demand for volunteers.

The volunteer sign-up tent (yes you can sign up on site, too!) was full of volunteers-to-be. The kitchen was just done cooking the last hot meal which was being distributed to new arrivals from Tacloban. We walked to the tent for Oplan Hatid, and found it didn’t lack in drivers with cars, and what was in fact called for at that point were a new batch of dispatchers — a job that three girls readily raised their hands for.

But for sure there are times of the day, and certain days, when there are just not enough volunteers. So whenever you have some free time, do pass by Villamor Air Base. Sign up online for later in the week, but go there if / when you’ve got time to spare today. Bring some relief goods, bring some food for cooking for the kitchen, bring your car (and driver if you have one).
